This pattern was designed to be an improvement on the well know griffith’s gnat in terms of durability. Due to the goal of the tier, there are specific materials used that can’t really be switched out without messing up the intended look of the fly. Best to stick strictly to the recipe on this one.

This pattern is just one of those flies that has a specific purpose, and doesn’t have much room for varitaion. You can change up the thread color to build different colored heads if you wish. Other than that, it is smart to just stay on track with the original, and have plenty of sizes on hand. That way you’ll be prepared for any situation out on the water.

Matt’s Gnat is a major improvement on the age old griffith’s gnat. Although the griffith’s gnat is irreplaceable in the world of fly fishing, you may start to pull out Matt’s Gnat more often. It has much of the same look, but is far more durable without having to worry about the hackle unraveling. The pattern floats like a champ, and will have the trout begging for more in no time!

Fishing this fly alone is the name of the game, and will often provide the best results. Presented delicately with a drag free drift would have any fish in the river doing a double take. You can also fish it behind a larger dry fly in a double dry rig, if you are dealing with less spooky fish, and are having trouble seeing the bug on the water. Either way, the fish should be fighting to get to this bug first.
