Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Straight shank
  • Eyes: Medium brass eyes
  • Tail: Wooly bugger marabou
  • Legs: Speckled crazy-legs
  • Body: SLF whitlock dubbing
  • Collar: Hen soft hackle
  • Head: Same dubbing as body

  • Use any hook you like but make sure it’s a heavy gauge wire
  • Use any eyes you have
  • Use whatever color legs you have
  • Use whatever type of dubbing you’d like
  • You can use hackle instead of soft hackle
  • You can tie these in different colors and sizes
  • Use different eyes to change the weight of the fly to match the depth of the water you’re fishing

The eyes on top make this hook ride point up. This keeps it from getting hung up on the bottom. The soft hackle collar works really well because it keeps its profile but flows really well in the current. The dubbing creates a great profile in the water and adds depth to the fly.

Cast this fly about 6″ in front of a tailing carp. A good reference is imagine the carp is wearing a baseball hat, you want to land the fly at the end of the bill. Make a soft cast and let the fly get down to the bottom. Very slow short strips keep the line tight. If you see the carp turn on the fly give it a quick strip or continue stripping until the line goes tight. Remember to strip set and it’s on!
