Add a hot head with colored thread for added attractability if desired!
Vary the bead or the dubbing on the black beauty to change things up! The Black Beauty is part of a group of flies all closely related, “thread midges”. These midges are all really variations on the same group of flies. It is well worth your time to greatly vary these flies and fill your box up: these guys are sure to get the job done!
The Mercury Black Beauty is a great go-to pattern for imitating all sorts of midge species and potentially smaller annelids. This fly is budget-friendly, easy to tie and also very effective regardless of what stream you fish. Be sure to have a wide selection for your day on a Colorado Tailwater!
The Black Beauty is a great fly selection during any time of the year. Midges are everywhere and the Black Beauty should be one of your go-to fly imitations. Depending on how the Black Beauty is tied, it can also imitate a wide variety of small annelid species. For best results fishing, throw the Black Beauty on very small tippets (5-7X) underneath a fly that is an attractor pattern, but not a search pattern as these may spook wary fish depending on location. Be sure to tie this pattern in a variety of styles as subtle changes in pattern design may trigger fish to feed more heavily.
