The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
Tying Video
When the tailwaters aren’t cooperating this is often a fly that will turn your day around. It’s not called the Miracle Midge for nothing! It also happens to be a miracle on the vise. The materials are cheap, and easy to come by, but don’t have any substitutions.
This bug is tied specifically to imitate the translucent midges that are common in many Western tailwaters. The only color variations that would be useful would be a darker, and light version. The white thread would be considered the lighter version, and a cream thread could be used for the so called darker version. Having multiple size options in both colors is a must, especially for picky tailwater trout. Don’t be shy about changing up the wire rib colors as well.
The Miracle Midge is a savior pattern when you’re getting skunked below a dam somewhere out West. The simplicity of the pattern is just what those fish want to see. The stark contrast of the body and head is also a game changer, when paired with the copper wire segmentation. Translucent midges can be hard little guys to imitate, but this pattern does it with ease. Tying up a whole spread of these bugs will only take you a few minuets, so there’s no reason not to have some in your box.
Fish this fly as the last bug in your nymph rig on some light tippet, say 5x or 6x, for the best results. You’ll definitely want some bigger, heavier flies above the Miracle Midge to help weigh it down, and get it to where the fish are. When all else fails on a technical stretch of water, pull this fly out and have some confidence in it. The bug will quickly show you that it deserves every bit of it.
