Tying Video
Tying tip: Use a brush or pick to brush the mohair fibers back.
This easy to tie leech is a very versatile pattern. It can be used as a streamer or as a nymph. The mohair body of this fly flows with the current to create a breathing motion that is irresistible to hungry trout. Pair that with the flowing marabou tail and you have the recipe for a fish catching machine.
If you are using this fly as a streamer you should cast into the head of pools and strip downstream through the pool. This lets the fly get deep to the bottom of the pool to find those hungry fish. Use a very slow retrieve, leeches aren’t the best swimmers!
This is a cool fly to nymph with because you don’t have to have a perfect drag free drift to be successful. You can add some motion to this fly (generally created by large mends) by giving it a jigging motion in the current. This works very well and is the reason this fly should be in everyones nymph or streamer box.
