The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
Tying Video
Water boatman can be looked over very easily when it comes to trout fare. People forget about these bugs, but in a late season stillwater situation you’d be sorry to be caught without them in your box. This fly has one substitution to take advantage of if necessary.
Legs: Lifeflex in Olive or Dark Green will get the job done as well.
This fly has two main colors that tend to work very well. The first color is the olive that it’s originally tied in, and the second color is silver. You should make sure to have both options in your box, with a couple sizes of each. Being ready to present those big stillwater fish with exactly what they want is the name of the game out there.
The Morris Water Boatman may not be the first pattern you think you need in your stillwater box, but rethinking that logic would be wise. The whole species of insects that are water boatman are overlooked actually. For late season stillwater fishing this pattern is an absolute must have. They are flashy enough to attract attention, and have a great profile. This bug will is also tough as nails after the UV coating.
Fish this fly during late season on the western stillwater of your choice where water boatman are present and you won’t be disappointed. This bug can turn an ordinary trout in a ravenous monster. Try both colors to see which one the fish seem to really key in on.
