Substitution for such a simple pattern with very few materials is often difficult, but there is one worth pointing out.
Legs:Â Any of the variations of round rubber legs made by various companies are okay to use. You can also use medium instead of small depending on how beefy you want those legs to appear.
The Morrish Hopper is a tried and true hopper pattern that can turn your summer day fishing into a feeding frenzy. For that specific reason, and the fact there isn’t much room for added materials, or many materials to take away this fly is best tied by the recipe that Ken Morrish has graced us with. Although, changing up the colors never hurts. Pink or Purple can really do some damage!
This big hunk of foam is a wonderful representation of a hopper, as well as being somewhat easy to tie. As long as you prepare your foam bodies, the rest is very straightforward and easy to get the hang of. This bug also rides well with a trailer fly underneath it or behind it. Another added bonus is that it floats like a cork. A great choice for late summer drift boat fishing, and wading alike.
This is a go to fly for a hopper dropper rig or a double dry rig. When the tricos are coming off, but you just can’t keep your eye on that little dry fly, put this guy in front of it. Who knows, the fish may just eat the hopper! That’s a great tactic when fishing small dries from a moving boat. As far as hopper dropper rigs are concerned, this fly can be absolutely unstoppable.
