As far as mouse patterns go this is one of the simpler ones on the vise. No substitutions really exist because changing out any of these materials would affect the look of the fly, and the way it swims to drastically. Stick with the recipe on this one.
You can switch out the foam colors for things like grey, tan, and brown to have some variety in your mouse collection. Sometimes dark brown deer hair or something similar will look nice too. Having one larger size and one smaller size should suit your needs pretty well.
This mouse pattern is much more refined than many of the others you’ll find these days. Easy to tie, minimal materials, floats high and dry, and has a perfect mouse outline! There’s really not much more you could ask for from a little rodent, there’s only so much he can do! Fishing mice is exhilarating, so if you haven’t tried it tie a few of these and hop on board.
