The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
Tying Video
Being such a classic small streamer pattern, the materials used are pretty much locked in as the best options. The deer hair has some leniency though, and a couple of different things will work well.
Collar: The hair at the base of a Buck Tail will create almost the same look as the Premo Deer Hair.
Head: Again, the hair at the base of a Buck Tail will create almost the same look as the Premo Deer Hair.
As far as variations are concerned the color scheme on this fly is the most common thing to change up. Different color deer hair, and different color sparkle braid can make for some pretty drastic changes to the fly. various sizes are another way to change up this pattern.
The spun hair that makes up the collar and head of this pattern tend to push a decent amount of water, even in the smaller sizes. The stature and water push of the fly can get the attention of an aggressive fish from a good distance. The flash of the sparkle braid also plays a large part in the attention getting process. After the attention is gained, the movement of the other materials seals the deal.
The Muddler Minnow fished alone on a loop knot will hook it’s fair share of fish. It’s also a great streamer pattern for smaller rods due to it’s smaller size in most cases. Another great way to fish it is behind a bigger streamer as a trailer fly. Double your chances of that explosive streamer eat!
