The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
Tying Video
This fly has minimal substitution options, but does have a few. Following the recipe closely is more important on this fly than others.
Body: Muskrat Dubbing can be difficult to come across. If you can only get the hide with the fur still attached just take the gray fuzzy fur from underneath and mix it yourself.
Legs: Hen Saddle will work fine, but the Hungarian Partridge looks best.
No variations exist with this fly because of it’s simple nature. An Ice Dub head brushed out appropriately would look nice though. Adding Lead Free Wire is a good option if you need the fly to get down quickly, and don’t want to add a bead.
The reason this fly is such a fish magnet is the movement of the muskrat. It essentially pulsates in the the water, giving your fly an ultra realistic movement. As always, the iridescent sheen of the peacock herl is something no trout can resist. The wide variety of insects this pattern can possibly imitate makes it a great pattern for new water, or when the fish are just being finicky.
Fished as the point fly in a nymph rig for the larger sizes, and the trailing fly in the smaller sizes this bug is sure to produce it’s fair share of strikes. After it gets the strike the rest is on you, so don’t blow it!
