This fly has amazing action in the water. The dumbbell eye placement is key for the movement of this fly. It rides hook point up and imitates the way a crawfish jumps backwards when fleeing. The way the claws and soft hackle look with the movement imitates a crawfish perfectly. The colors you tie these in finish off the look, I recommend spending some time to catch some crawfish in your local fisheries to see what size and colors they are, then tie this fly to match.

Crawfish live on the bottom. To be successful with crawfish flies you have to fish them on the bottom. When fishing any crawfish imitation you have to be patient. Let the fly sink and fish it slowly. Most folks don’t have the patience to fish this fly correctly, but when done properly there are few things that can out-fish a good crawfish pattern. You can fish this fly on a sinking or floating line, get the fly to the bottom and then give it short quick strips along the bottom. you can also use a strike indicator and use this fly as a nymph. You can then throw mends into the line to jig the fly along the bottom.
