Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Straight shank streamer
  • Eyes: Medium dumbell eyes
  • Tail: 2 Tips of olive grizzly soft hackle
  • Flash: Pearl krystal flash
  • Rib: Copper brassie wire
  • Body: Nearnuff dubbing
  • Hackle: Olive grizzly soft hackle
  • Head: Nearnuff sculpin olive dubbing
  • Use any weighted eyes you want, pseudo eyes are best
  • Use whatever flash you have
  • You can use any wire you’d like, but keep it to medium size or less
  • You can use any dubbing you like to create the best color
  • This fly looks great with some more flash and rubber legs
  • Try tying the eyes on the top of the hook shank to invert the hook

This easy to cast sculpin pattern is the perfect small sculpin imitation. The grizzly effect adds depth and movement to the pattern and the soft hackle flows similar to marabou. The heavy eyes get the fly into the strike zone quick and gets it to the fish’s level.

Sculpin live on the bottom of the rivers, so fish this fly on the bottom. Don’t strip this fly fast through the water column or it will never get deep enough. Cast toward the bank and run this fly downstream through deep holes, pools, rifts, and troughs. Dead drifting works well with this pattern because the materials breathe so well underwater they don’t need stripping inputs. Use mends to make the fly travel where you want it to after the cast. Use a combination of strips, mends, dead drifting, and swinging to catch fish on this fly. Sculpin usually do not swim fast, a short quick strip and then a long pause is the best action for this fly.
