Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Standard jig hook size #14
  • Bead: Slotted tungsten bead 7/64″ silver
  • Thread: UTC 70 denier fluorescent pink
  • Weight: Lead free round wire .020
  • Tail: Strung rooster saddle silver doctor
  • Body: Ringneck tail feathers black
  • Rib: Sulky holoshimmer blue
  • Thorax: Antron bright dubbing peacock blue
  • Collar: Thread collar sealed with head cement
  • Hook: Choose your favorite jig hook for this fly, it will all work. You can also use a standard hook with this pattern as well. If you use a standard hook, consider using a down eye.
  • Bead: Any silver bead will work. Slotted beads are required on jig hooks.
  • Thread: Use any thin diameter thread that you like. Go as thin as you are comfortable with, but try not to go thicker than 8/0 or 70 denier, as this will throw the proportions of the fly off.
  • Weight: This step can be skipped if not needed.
  • Tail: Strung rooster saddle is the best for this, as the colors are vibrant on these feathers. For a mottling effect, try guinea fowl.
  • Body: Pheasant tail makes a great body as well. Just be sure the material is black.
  • Rib: Any thin holographic tinsel will work great. For a bit of a duller pattern, small round wire can work as well.
  • Thorax: Use any shimmery blue dubbing that you like.
  • Collar: Thread collar, use your favorite head cement to seal.

This is a great pattern to play around with, like most jig flies are. For an even thinner fly that will sink quicker, try using some black floss for the body. This will result in a thinner profile for a better sink rate. For a more buggy fly for those warmer days, try adding a CDC collar to this fly.

This is a great attractor pattern to use as a lead fly in the wintertime. Blue seems to be a great wintertime color, so fish this when the water is cold and low. Don’t underestimate this fly due to it’s size, as the flashiness will catch fishes eyes from across the river. With the jig hardware this fly will ride hook point up which will eliminate some snagging, which allows the fly to be fished on the bottom where the fish are going to be.

Fish this as the lead fly in an indicator rig, or as the point fly on a euro nymphing rig. Be sure to get this fly on the bottom of the river if fishing in the winter time, as this is where the trout are going to be.
