This fly has a very unique look to it, and the method used for the body is nothing short of unique either. Leaving this fly the way it’s originally tied is the best way to ensure that it will look the way it’s supposed to, and work the way it was meant to.

You can tie this fly in varying shades of orange and brown to try to imitate the October caddis in your area. Other than that, and tying a few different sizes of course, there really isn’t much in the way of variation that can or should be done to this fly.

Soft hackle flies in general are very buggy, and attract their fair share of strikes. This particular bug does a great job of imitating a nymph during the drift, and then the emerging bug as it swings to the top of the water column and the end of a drift. It’s almost like a two in one, which hopefully means twice the strikes! Tie some of these up as October approaches, and be ready for that last great hatch before Winter.

Soft hackle flies like this one can be fished in a variety of ways, but one of the most effective is in a nymph rig. When you fish this fly in a nymph rig you have the chance to get an eat on the drift, and then at the end of the drift you’ll want to let your flies swing so that this bug has a chance to rise in the water column and entice and eat that way as well.
