Some of the materials in this pattern have very close equivalents, so changing them out isn’t a big deal at all. This may not be the most in depth mysis pattern out there, but it gets the job done with flying colors.
Tail: White Antron or any other synthetic equivalent material will easily take the place of the McFlylon if need be.
Tail 2: A great Flashabou substitute is Opal Mirage Tinsel, and for this fly size small will work well.
Rib: Again, a great Flashabou substitute is Opal Mirage Tinsel, and for this fly size small will work well.
Mysis are best fished in a white or clear looking color scheme, but some florescent colors like yellow or orange can work wonders. Otherwise stick to the original recipe for the best results on those tailwater big boys.
A lot of the mysis patterns out there nowadays are very long, and involved when it comes to tying them. This fly is extremely simple to tie, and you can absolutely crank them off the vise to fill up your tailwater box. It also uses very common materials, so chances are you won’t be having to make a trip to the shop or an online order to get some of these guys tied up. Besides being easy on the wallet and the vise, these bugs fool the pickiest below the dam fish in the West.
Fishing tailwaters can be a frustrating type of fly fishing for some anglers, but it doesn’t have to be. Change flies often, go smaller on flies, go thinner on tippet, make more subtle presentations, and don’t give up on a hole after just a few casts. Fish this bug on 5x or 6x fluorocarbon tippet, and make sure you’re getting down deep enough to be in front of the fish. You’ll be surprised how eagerly the fish are to eat these nutritious morsels if presented correctly.
