Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Standard jig hook size #14
  • Bead: Slotted tungsten bead 3mm black
  • Thread: UTC 70 denier olive
  • Tail: Ultra chenille fluorescent green
  • Body: Hemmingway’s UV hair dubbing plus brown olive
  • Collar: CDC feathers olive
  • Hook: Any standard jig nymph hook will work fine. This can also be tied on a standard nymph hook.
  • Bead: If tying on a jig hook, slotted beads are a necessity. If tying on a standard hook standard beads will work. Use darker colored beads for this fly.
  • Thread: Use any thin diameter thread that you like. The thinner the better, and try not to go thicker than 8/0 or 70 denier.
  • Tail: Ultra chenille is the best for this.
  • Body: Use any dark brown dubbing that you like. Try to get a natural dubbing, as anything too flashy will look unrealistic.
  • Collar: CDC is the best for this.

There is not much you can do with this pattern besides changing up the color of the tail. For a fly with a little bit of flash, try replacing the chenille with pearl core braid. This won’t add much but it might just be enough to get the fish’s attention. For a more buggy fly, consider adding another CDC feather in between the tail and the body. For an even more realistic pattern, add 4-6 deer hairs in between the tail and the body and cut them short for little caddis legs.

This is a nice little caddis pattern that imitates one of the first stages of caddisflies. This is when the pupas form a case around their bodies for protection and food collection. This stage of the caddisflies is often overlooked, and not fished very often, so these types of patterns are nice to have in the fly box.

Fish this close to the bottom where these pupas get swept off the bottom. Euro nymphing and indicator fishing is the best for this fly, as it allows the angler to really get down to the bottom. Fishing this nymph off the back of a dry fly isn’t a terrible idea, just be sure to give it enough line to get to the bottom of the river.
