This fly can be a great fly to make simple changes to to get a completely different fly that will work great. Besides changing up the thread color or wire color, the collar of this fly is somewhere where you can really get creative. Try adding some CDC or long fibered dubbing for a great mayfly/midge emerger pattern. For a little more flash, grab some UTC mirage opal flash and add a flashback wing case, or some hot orange or pink thread for a hot spot.
This fly is a great all around producer fly with many functions. With practically no appendages or any bulk, this fly sinks quickly and will stay down in the strike zone where trout are munching on nymphs. This is a very quick tie as well and the materials are not as costly as some other flies. If this one ends up on a log at the bottom of your favorite hole, it doesn’t hurt as much to leave it down there, but it will more likely end up in a fishes mouth!
Fish this fly practically any way you want to! Whether that be on the end of a bobber nymph rig, at the end of a dry dropper rig or as the tag for your euro nymph rig, this fly will produce fish. This fly performs very well in low clear water as it is not too intrusive and can be easily held up by a dry fly in those late summer/ early fall afternoons where something larger might spook fish.
