Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Emerger Hook, Reverse Bend, 2x Short
  • Bead: Brass or Tungsten or Glass, Sized to Hook
  • Thread: UTC 70 Denier, White
  • Rib: Gun Metal Blue Ultra Wire, X-Small
  • Thorax: Light Gray Prism Dubbing

With so few materials already included in this fly it is hard to have lots of substitutions. That being said, a variety of dubbing can be incorporated into this fly and accomplish the same general look.

Thorax: UV Ice Dub of a similar color will give this fly much of the same appearance.

The Poison Tung is somewhat of a variation of the famous Black Beauty, so the only things to do to it are a few color changes. A black and red version, as well as a white and purple version are solid choices to switch up the color. Having plenty of sizes, as always, is a very smart idea.

White and blue are some of the best winter pattern colors out there, and this fly boasts them both! Paired with that flashy dubbing for the thorax, it would basically be a crime for a fish not to eat it. If you like weight on your flies this one can easily become a go to midge pattern that will get down in the water column, and in front of the fish.

Fishing this fly at any open slot in a nymph rig, whether that be the top or the bottom, will produce results. This bug fishes remarkably well in the winter, but certainly don’t discount it at other times of the year when midges are present.
