Coldwater The Psycho Prince has a specific recipe that has proved to be the most productive, but a few parts can be switched up if you don’t have all of that on hand.
Variations for this bug are mostly going to consist of color changes. You typically see it tied in purple, orange, and green. Having all of those colors in your box will cover all of your needs if it turns out to be the hot fly one day, which is more than highly likely.
Fish can really go psychotic over this fly. Purple is always a go to color for me when I’m not sure what’s happening in the water. The natural features of this fly, and the crazy colors work together to make something that grabs the fish’s attention, but has the characteristics to fool them if they take a moment to inspect it. This bug is a staple in my box year round; don’t be afraid to fish it in the dead of winter, I promise you’ll be pleasantly surprised!
The Psycho Prince is a killer bug when you’re on a new piece of water, conditions are not optimal, nothing else seems to be consistent, or all of the above. Fishing it as a point fly in a nymph rig or a dropper under a big dry fly produce the best results. Fish tend to be aggressive with this fly, so be prepared for some trout deliberately smacking it.
