Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Standard jig nymph hook size #12
  • Bead: Slotted tungsten bead 1/8″ black nickel
  • Thread: Veevus GSP 30 denier white
  • Tail: Coq-de-Leon
  • Body: 2 rooster saddle feathers stripped
  • Collar: Orange ice dub
  • Hook: Any jig nymph hook will work great for this fly. Standard nymph hooks can work for this pattern as well.
  • Bead: Slotted tungsten beads are required for jig hooks, but if you use a standard nymph hook, standard beads are fine. Tungsten is preferred, but brass can work too.
  • Thread: Any think diameter thread will work fine for this pattern. The thinner the better, and try not to go thicker than 8/0 or 70 denier.
  • Tail: Pheasant tail can always make a great nymph tail. If you want the mottled appearance, try wood duck flank.
  • Body: Synthetic quills can work great, as well as midge tubing for a great ribbing effect.
  • Collar: Use any flashy dubbing that you like.

This is a simple jig that can be added to a little bit to make interesting patterns to get the exact look that you want. Tie this in sizes #18-#12 and in virtually any color way for nice attractors or naturals. Add a turn or two of CDC or partridge for a great soft hackle.

This is a neat little jig nymph that has some great ribbing effect with the two rooster saddle quills. This also allows this fly to be super slim and to drop quickly in the water column. The jig hardware allows this fly to ride along the bottom of the river hook point up, so the snags at the bottom of the hole won’t be as big of an issue.

Fish this like any other standard nymph. This fly can work great as the point fly on a euro rig, or under an indicator. If fishing in warmer weather, this fly can make a great dropper off of your favorite dry fly. If fishing under a dry, be sure that the dry can hold this fly up as the tungsten bead may be a bit heavier for smaller dries. Try to get the best dead drift as possible for best results.
