We really owe Schroeder one for creating such an awesome hopper pattern for us. Fortunately, he also created this pattern with a decent amount of materials that have substitutions. Hopefully you won’t even have to make a material run to the fly shop to tie up a few of these guys.

Rib: UNI Thread in 3/0 Brown will work just as well as the UTC 140 Denier for the rib on this hopper.

Body: Superfine Dubbing in a comparable color to the Olive Tan Hareline Dubbing will do the trick if need be.

Wing: Mottled Peacock Wing makes a fine wing in place of the Mottled Turkey Wing.

Being more of a classically styled fly, the most common colors tend to stick to the classic options. Tan, olive, and brown are all solid choices to tie this bug in. With that being said, don’t be afraid to toss on a modern touch, and give it some new color ideas. Hopper yellow, or chartreuse could be a great look for this fly. If you were seeking a bit more durability on the bug, go ahead and replace the pheasant tail legs with rubber legs, or spanflex. You can still put a knot in it to represent the joint.

Schroeder’s Parachute Hopper is a high floating, highly visible, fish catching machine. Whether you’re up in the high country in search of cutthroat and brook trout, or on your local river trying to get a few browns and rainbows in the net; this is the summertime bug you want to pull out. It’s classic style gives it an unmatched realistic look, and profile. Don’t be surprised if it turns out to be your go to fly for any hopper dropper rig. Foam flies step aside for this guy!

Fished alone, and close to the bank in slow water will turn some of those lurking big boys for sure. In bigger water, or out of the boat, go with the hopper dropper approach for the best results. Applying floatant the night before fishing to allow it to soak into the fly and dry is always a solid idea with bugs like this. It will make your time on the water much more enjoyable the next day.
