The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
Tying Video
Tying tips: The fish skull helmet is heavier on the bottom than the top. This will make the hook ride with whichever side of the helmet is down, so if you want it to ride hook point down you can flip the helmet.
This heavy sculpin can get down to the bottom quickly and stay there. Sculpin live on the bottom so you have to get their imitations deep. Utilize the heavy sculpin helmet and pair with a sink tip line if needed. Many sculpin flies ride hook point up, this keeps the fly from getting snagged on the bottom. The marabou tail, the hackle, and the red gills all make this fly a great choice to use.
Fish this fly through the deeper water. I like to find a shoal, a shelf, or a big rock to cast this fly on top of. The fly is heavy and rides hook point up so it won’t get snagged. Then strip it into the deep hole and let it drift through. If you want to give it some movement you can but I usually like to swing it or dead drift it into the holes. When you feel the line go tight give it a hard strip and the fight is on.
