Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Heavy straight shank wide gap
  • Body 1: Belly color of the fly
  • Body 2: Back color of the fly
  • Throat: Hackle fibers
  • Eyes: Fish skull eyes
  • Finish: UV cure

Tying Tips: Have a fine tooth comb present to brush out the fly before and while trimming to shape. Be patient while trimming the fly, it will take you longer to trim the fly to shape than it is to tie in the material.

  • Use a hook specific for your target fish
  • Tie the body with EP fibers instead of SF blend
  • Use any eyes you like
  • You can use marabou or dubbing for the throat if you don’t have the hackle you need
  • The EP baitfish is very similar and works just as well
  • Add some flashabou to the tail or back of the fly
  • Use a waterproof marker like a sharpie to color the fly any way possible
  • You can tie in all white and color the fly to any shade if SF Blend isn’t sold in the color you need
  • Tie in a weed guard if you fish over a lot of weeds, rocks, and logs

This very realistic baitfish pattern can be tied in any size and any color to match your baitfish. Tie them for big tarpon to bass or trout. The fibers are waterproof so they won’t hold water which makes the fly easier to cast. It is pretty much weightless so you can cast them on any rod.

This fly is a perfect example of a fly that you choose your depth with which fly line you use. With a floating fly line this fly will not get deep, you won’t have much luck unless you  are fishing the shallowest of shoals. If you step up to a poly leader or sink tip line you will be able to get this fly to the strike zone for most river fisheries. Getting this fly to the same depth as the baitfish you are imitating is critical. If you fish this fly on deep lakes and rivers you may want to invest in a depth charge or full sinking line. A 250-300 grain weight sinking line is recommended. This is a great technique for targeting big fish chasing bait balls.

Fish this fly near structure for ambush predators like trout and bass.
