Major variations of this fly consist around color changes on the body and thorax/head dubbing.  Changing these colors lets you make olive, orange, tan and more.  For more attractor like patterns, you can use flashier dubbings like ice dub to create a lot of flash.

This caddis pattern has a couple major benefits and drawbacks. First, I’ve found it to outperform most high floating caddis patterns like a traditional elk hair caddis. It looks buggy and rides low in the water which is alot closer to a real caddis on the water. The downside is it doesn’t float extremely well and requires some maintenance. The ability to catch fish due to the way it rides low in the surface is key.

I’d highly recommend fishing this fly as the point fly in a 2 dry fly set up.  That way if it sinks or doesn’t float well you have your first fly to help sight it.  A high floating foam or attractor pattern works great as the first fly and then drop this off about 24 inches or so.

If it sinks that can be good too as long as you track it as it imitates an emerger when wet as well and serves a couple stages depending on if it’s floating or sunk just under the water.
