The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
Tying Video
This is a pattern you’ll likely look at and want to change nothing about. It’s just looks intriguing, to you and the fish! Substitutions aren’t the best idea on this guy, so go ahead and try to stick with the recipe if you can.
The BWO color scheme that the original version of this fly has going for it really seems to work well. Don’t be shy about changing up the colors on them a bit though. You can go for more of an attractor pattern look with a black and purple version, or tie it according to a specific insect species in your area. It looks great tied in PMD colors as well! Have a few sizes floating around in your box to be prepared for any situation you may encounter out there.
Stalcup’s Baetis is the epitome of a perfectly proportioned small mayfly nymph. The d-rib creates some unsurpassed segmentation that will have the fish foaming at the mouth and ready to chow down. They are also easy enough to tie that you should have a few sizes and colors in your box, at the ready, at all times. This pattern can easily become a confidence fly for any angler who fishes baetis often.
Fishing this fly in a nymph rig below some heavier flies, split shot, or both is the most well suited place for it. Once it gets weighed down and is in the feeding lane, the fly itself will do the rest. All you have to worry about is setting the hook and getting your net out!
