Tying Video
The Insult is an ultra simple fly, but does have a possible substitution. Following the original recipe is always the best option obviously, but if your in a pinch feel free to swap out.
Tail 1: India Hen Neck in the correct shade of brown will serve well as part of the tail on this fly.
This fly is really not susceptible to many variations. You can add a bead if you’d like some extra weight, and you can also add some more wire underneath. If you’re really looking for a fast sinking fly, you are more than welcome to do both. Other than those changes, you can tie the fly in a few different sizes to be prepared for whatever the river may throw at you.
This pattern is something you can look at and immediately have confidence in because it just looks buggy. You can tell right off the bat that many fish will take an interest in it. There’s something to be said for a simple, confidence fly. Easy on your mind, and easy on the vise, and and easy choice for the fish. The materials for this fly are super common and cheap, so it shouldn’t be a problem to crank out more than a few.
A nymph rig is the most suitable place for this fly. Depending on the size and weight you tie this fly in will dictate where in the nymph rig you’ll want to place this bug. It can be a killer point fly in a heavier, larger version.
