Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Super Point, Round, Straight Eye, 2X Heavy, 3X Wide, 2X Short, Curved Shank
  • Bead: Brass or Tungsten, Sized to Hook
  • Weight: .010 Lead Free Wire
  • Thread: UTC 70 Denier, Yellow
  • Body: Glo Bug Yarn, Yellow and Orange

For the simple reason that there are so few materials on this fly, there are not really any worthy substitutions available. Best to stick with the recipe closely on this one, it catches it’s fair share of fish, plus some!

The glo bug yarn used for the body comes in a wide variety of colors, and that should be noted. Thus pattern should be tied in a variety of sizes, and colors. That will ensure that you have the right fly for any situation you may find yourself in. Having some with brass beads, tungsten beads, and then some of each with and without lead free wire is a very convenient luxury when you’re switching water depths frequently.

Whether you like it or not, this fly flat out works. You don’t want to be the guy getting out fished by someone who isn’t afraid of the purist snarks, so grow some thicker skin and tie up some of these yourself. This is one of the most effective egg patterns ever created, and works wonders on high, dirty water conditions. With that being said, fish will also readily snack on this fly year round no matter the water conditions.

If it’s runoff season, you have no idea what kind of bugs are in the river, no other flies seem to be doing the trick, or any combination of the three this should be one of your go to fly choices. If not a single fish is interested in this pattern, you may as well head home and tie instead. Fishing it as a point fly in a nymph rig is the best place for it. With the ability to vary the weight so easily, it can set the tone for the whole rig. It also attracts just about every fish in the river.
