Tying tips: Use a hair stacker to stack the deer hair before tying in to get an even length collar. Use some sharp razor blades to trim the deer hair.
This fly is a combination of a zonker and a muddler minnow, 2 of the most popular trout streamers. The zonker body on this fly creates a great movement in the water, the dubbing body and the gills make this fly look like a wounded baitfish. The cone head really helps get this fly to the fish’s level. The movement from the zonker intices strikes and is sure to produce fish.
Trout react well to hatches because it means easy food. When nothing is hatching trout have to start searching for other food sources. However, trout are opportunistic feeders. If an easy meal presents itself they are likely to eat it. The best time to throw a streamer is when there are no prevalent hatches which usually means early fall. This is a great searching pattern as it can imitate different species of baitfish.
Use a sink tip to get the fly deeper in pools or deeper current. Cast this fly near ambush spots along the bank and strip slowly. Short quick strips with long pauses work best for searching patterns.
Tie these in some larger sizes for bass, fish them near structure and cover to get strikes.
