This is a san juan worm style fly and since there are only two materials there are no substitutions without just making it some other named pattern.  You can add a beadhead if you’d like for additional weight or even lead wraps to help get it down deep.  I prefer as much weight as possible on annelid (worm) patterns.

The major benefit of this fly is in the sili worm material. Relatively new to the fly tying world, this material has superior movement and transparency to that of traditional chenille patterns like the san juan worm. While some argue this fly isn’t a fly at all, if you want to catch fish and put your purist hat where it belongs, then you can outfish a lot of traditional patterns. I have found great success with this fly as of late while I euro nymph and is one of the top competition flies out there right now, especially in one fly competitions.

Fish this fly deep. The material itself moves alot in the current of the river, but doesn’t sink very well because it’s fairly buoyant and bulky.  Adding split shot is a good technique if you fish with an indicator, but make sure you have 4-8 inches in between the split shot and the fly cause it will help the pattern really drift naturally increasing the chance to catch more fish (like this pattern even needs help… )

I have had mixed results with this fly when euro nymphing, but If they are eating san juans, they’ll eat this just as much if not more as my point fly (lowest fly on rig/last fly on rig).  If they aren’t really eating this fly, I have good luck making it my first fly on a 3 fly rig because they still come up an look at it and then go and eat one of my other more natural flies.
